100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE "WHITE HURRICANE"
HURRICANE
"A wind of force 12 on the Beaufort scale (equal to or exceeding 64 knots or 74 mph)."
Green Planet Extreme Adventures is dedicating this season to the memory of the lost sailors who perished in the great storms of 1905 and 1913. This year marks the 100 year anniversary of the 1913 storm, which was the deadliest great lakes storm ever. The “Great Storm of 1913”, also described as the “Freshwater Fury” or the “White Hurricane”, is remembered as the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of the Lakes.
For five harrowing days between November 6th and November 11th, the massive storm ravaged the region. By the time it subsided, twelve ships had gone down leaving no survivors. Another 32 went aground during the storm, seven of which were completely destroyed. Lake Huron was the hardest hit in terms of ships sunk and lives lost, but major shipwrecks also occurred on Lakes Superior, Erie, and Michigan during the storm. In all, the storm claimed 235 lives on the Lakes, 178 on Lake Huron alone, and about three dozen more ashore.
A portion of the proceeds from all tours will be contributed to the Marine Sanctuary operated by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) located in Alpena, Michigan. The sanctuary in Alpena is one of 13 sanctuary's worldwide, and is the only fresh water sanctuary. The personnel at NOAA find shipwrecks, protect them and educate the public about our maritime history. We support NOAA and are proud to contribute to their awesome projects, including a high school underwater robotic vehicle contest. Many have paid the ultimate sacrifice on the most dangerous body of water in the world. We dedicating this season to their memory.
